To describe my mother would be to write about a hurricane in its perfect power. Or the climbing, falling colours of a rainbow. — Maya Angelou

Mother’s Day! Love your mothers and listen to them, they do know better than you think! Greek moms are a real hurricane! Their love is uncompromising and they are so caring like mothers around the globe. The mentality of a Greek mother is expressed in the following humorous but so truthful sayings that kids are fed up to hear but always remember as time goes by!

Enjoy the way the Greek mum shows their affection, love, and endless support to their kids no matter their age! Here are some for you! https://greekreporter.com/2021/05/09/greek-mother-sayings/ Till next time’s Rock Post, LOVE your mothers and think of them often!

1. “If you do/say this again I’ll have a heart attack!”
– Because guilt is best used by Greek mothers…

2. “There is no ‘why’! It’s because I said so.”
– She’s right, she’s your mother…

3. “Wear a clean pair of underwear. Should you get injured and brought to the hospital, what would the nurses say?”

– They wouldn’t pay attention to the blood and to the fact that you’re dying, but they will notice your dirty underwear. But, who knows, one of the nurses may become your future wife…

4. “You’re like your father.”
– He’s to blame for everything bad that happens, including a possible alien invasion…

5. “Do you know what time you came home last night?”
– Of course, your  Greek mother sure does!

6. “Won’t you become a father one day? I hope your children will do to you the same things you’ve done to me.”
– Family justice must be served…

7. “Stop walking barefoot on the floor or you’ll get a cold.”
– Every Greek mother has graduated from med school and everyone in the house knows that…

8. “Go on grouching and you’ll see what will happen. I brought you into this world, and I can kill you.”
– Careful — she really feels she is within her rights!

9. “When I was your age, I had already two children.”
– When she was your age, it was 1960 – Kennedy was alive, and Elizabeth was still Queen of England. Things have changed. Well, almost changed…

10. “Call your aunt, it’s her birthday today.”
– A Greek mother always pays attention to events Which could upset the family harmony and will instruct you to call, even if you only speak to your aunt once a year on her birthday.

I Carry Your Heart With Me is a children’s adaptation of the beloved E. E. Cummings poem, beautifully illustrated by Mati Rose McDonough. Showing the strong bond of love between mother and child, within nature and throughout life, Cummings’ heartfelt words expressed through McDonough’s lovely illustrations combine to create a fresh, yet classic, the portrayal of love. First published by Liveright Publishing in 1952 in Complete Poems: 1904-1962 by E. E. Cummings, as [i carry your heart with me (i carry it in], “I Carry Your Heart With Me” has become a classic and very popular poem over the years. McDonough’s illustrations provide a new artistic interpretation of this familiar poem.

A working mother reassures her child that even when they’re apart, they’re always in each other’s hearts. This lovely board book is perfect for moms to share with their little ones.

Though we’re not together
we’re never truly apart,
because you’re always on my mind
and you’re always in my heart.

This is what a mother tells her child as she leaves for work each day. This lovely board book perfectly captures the sentiment that many women feel about being a working mom. The lyrical text takes us through a mother’s day away, showing us that although she’s working hard, her child is always on her mind and always in her heart.

A young girl is torn by her desire to stay home with her family and the familiarity of their village, and her desire to go to school and discover the world beyond the mountains that surround them. Every time the girl insists that she will stay, her mother repeats that she must go―that there is more to life than labor in the coffee fields. Their loving exchange reveals the struggles and sacrifices that they will both have to make for the sake of the young girl’s future. The sweet, simple text captures a mother’s love and her wish for a life of opportunity for her daughter.

During a visit to her grandma s house, a young girl discovers a box of poems in the attic, poems written by her mother when she was growing up. Her mother s family often moved around the United States and the world because her father was in the Air Force. Over the years, her mother used poetry to record her experiences in the many places the family lived. Reading the poems and sharing those experiences through her mother s eyes, the young girl feels closer to her mother than ever before. To let her mother know this, she creates a gift: a book with her own poems and copies of her mother s. And when she returns her mother s poems to the box in the attic, she leaves her own poems too, for someone else to find, someday. Using free verse for the young girl s poems and tanka for her mother s, master poet Nikki Grimes creates a tender intergenerational story that speaks to every child s need to hold onto special memories of home, no matter where that place might be.

A young child asks his mother to tell the story of where he came from. I might tell how you came from a land far away in a hot air balloon. The basket slowly drifted down like a feather into our yard. I dropped the firewood I was carrying and ran to you. You re home now, I said. Or maybe it was a lark and not a stork that brought the child to the mother. Or perhaps he was rescued from a dragon! Each lyrical and fantastic tale contains a small kernel of truth that pieces together the baby s journey across a wide ocean into his new mother’s arms. Beautifully illustrated by Jessica Lanan, The Story I’ll Tell is a gentle and moving story of adoption and parental love that is sure to touch the hearts of readers everywhere, no matter how they came to be a family.

“A tender knockout. It’s rare to find much vitality, spontaneity, and depth of feeling in such a simple, young book.”—Kirkus Reviews

Vera Williams tells of a young girl who, along with her waitress mother, saves coins in a big jar in hopes that they can someday buy a new chair for their apartment, the kind of chair her mother deserves after being on her feet all day in the Blue Tile Diner. Into the jar also goes the money Grandma saves whenever she gets a bargain at the market.

There hasn’t been a comfortable place to sit in the apartment since a fire in their previous apartment burned everything to “charcoal and ashes.” Friends and neighbors brought furniture to their new apartment downstairs, but no one brought anything big or soft or comfortable. Finally the jar is full, the coins are rolled, and in the book’s crowning moment, mother, daughter, and Grandma search four different furniture stores, and after carefully trying several chairs, like Goldilocks, they find the chair they’ve been dreaming of at last.

Vera Williams enhances this story about family, community, and the power of working together toward a common goal with her signature folk art-inspired paintings.

A Chair for My Mother has sold more than a million copies and is an ideal choice for reading and sharing at home and in the classroom. “A superbly conceived picture book expressing the joyful spirit of a loving family.”—The Horn Book

The sun rises, and a bear and cub begin their day together. They splash in the water, climb mountains, watch the colorful lights in the shimmering sky, and play with friends. They show their love for each other by touching noses, chasing each other, and, of course, hugging and snuggling before bed. A sweet, gentle rhyme, perfect for sharing with a special little one that also includes a “To” and “From” personalization page in the front of the book, making this heartwarming book an ideal gift.

Little ones adore being independent and trying new things. But they also need Mom and Dad’s reassurance and snuggles. With her spare, lyrical text, debut author Meg Fleming captures the exuberance, the affection, and the tender push-and-pull of life with a child. And illustrator Sarah Jane Wright’s evocative illustrations infuse the story with generous helpings of warmth and love.

From the bestselling author of I Didn’t Do My Homework Because… comes an irresistible meditation on the quest for connection. When an elephant falls in love, he does many foolish things. This soulful book is at once relatable and revealing, a reminder that love is worth striving for, and that the very best things in life will come to those who wait.

Whether a child has two moms, two dads, one parent, or one of each, this simple preschool read-aloud demonstrates that what’s most important in each family’s life is the love the family members share

It’s never too early to talk to your little ones about activism and standing up for the values close to their hearts. I simply adore this book, inspired by a true story of a child who attended the 2017 Women’s March in New York City. The book is based on young Mari’s desire to share a message with the world. Unsure how she will be heard, she writes a simple message on a poster, which she carries with her at the march. Before she knows it, her words are amplified beyond her wildest dreams – and she learns that even the youngest among us can raise our voices to change the world!

For the youngest member of an exuberant extended family, Sunday dinner at Grannie’s can be full indeed — full of hugs and kisses, full of tasty dishes, full to the brim with happy faces, and full, full, full of love. Happiness, sadness, bravery, anger, shyness . . . our hearts can feel so many feelings! Some make us feel as light as a balloon, others as heavy as an elephant. In My Heart explores a full range of emotions, describing how they feel physically, inside, with language that is lyrical but also direct to empower readers to practice articulating and identifying their own emotions.

With whimsical illustrations and an irresistible die-cut heart that extends through each spread, this gorgeously packaged and unique feelings book is sure to become a storytime favorite.

The Growing Hearts series celebrates the milestones of a toddler’s emotional development, from conquering fears and expressing feelings to welcoming a new sibling. Read them all!

From the beloved New York Times bestselling author of I Wish You More, Amy Krouse Rosenthal, this delectable follow-up to the bestselling Cookies and Christmas Cookies defines words that are associated with love.

From letting your friend have the last cookie (selfless) to waiting to lick the bowl together (considerate), here is a book for anyone looking for the right words to say I love you. Meanings are illuminated in this different kind of dictionary, which is every bit as heartwarming as the experience of baking cookies with someone you love.

Amy Krouse Rosenthal’s sweet little lessons, mixed with warm and inviting illustrations by mother-daughter duo Jane Dyer and Brooke Dyer, make for a book that will hit the spot! Go ahead, have another bite! (And another.)

A lovely Valentine’s Day present, especially with some home-baked cookies.

“You can only become truly accomplished at something you love. Don’t make money your goal. Instead, pursue the things you love doing, and then do them so well that people can’t take their eyes off you.” “Maya Angelou”

Generation Z kids and money – their thoughts revealed

Celebrating Thrift Day every 31st of October worldwide is a nice way to rethink and evaluate the ways little kids have to follow in order to save money. When I discuss with my Greek students on pocket money issue, they usually refer to their grandparents as their resort to get money in a form of gift or borrowed money after receiving good grades or being helpful to them.

Pocket money is important for kids around the globe and a lot of them don’t even get the chance to get some money on the contrary they work for nothing to support their families. Whatever the situation every kid experiences and the country’s mentality, kids need to know the importance of economising for a rainy day and have their own budget from a young age so they become more aware of the meaning of saving money and not being reckless spenders when they grow up. Money is nothing some say but others belive money is everything. Whta I remind to my students is that money come and go and change hands all the time, what counts in your life is to use your mind efficiently and money so you enjoy life to the most!

Checking on the following website you can trace info on coins, free educational games and enrich your students’ minds about money with a great lesson plan.

But sore feet aren’t much fun, and Jeremy soon sees that the things he has — warm boots, a loving grandma, and the chance to help a friend — are worth more than the things he wants.

seahorse (also written sea-horse and sea horse) is any of 46 species of small marine fish in the genusHippocampus. “Hippocampus” comes from the Ancient Greekhippókampos (ἱππόκαμπος), itself from híppos (ἵππος) meaning “horse” and kámpos (κάμπος) meaning “sea monster”.  Having a head and neck suggestive of a horse seahorses also feature segmented bony armour, an upright posture and a curled prehensile tail.

This board book edition of Eric Carle’s iconic Mister Seahorse dazzles with its brilliant colors and charming cast of characters.

When Mrs. Seahorse lays her eggs, she does it on Mr. Seahorse’s belly! She knows he will take good care of them. While he swims waiting for the eggs to hatch, he meets other underwater fathers caring for their babies. Now Eric Carle’s heart-warming New York Times bestseller is finally available in a board book edition, complete with the clear “peek-a-boo” pages that made the original such a hit. Brimming with bright, colorful sea life, this new board book will be irresistable to young children everywhere.

Little Seahorse is a supercharged seahorse! He swims circles around his seahorse friends, bounces around the butterflyfish and plays tag with the trumpetfish. All the sea animals are in awe of his speed! But Little Seahorse’s games aren’t always fun for everyone. He leaves Octopus in a tangle, makes Pufferfish inflate and sends Turtle into a spin!

Will Little Seahorse learn to control his speed and listen to his friends’ advice? Or is he too fast to follow?

Echo Reef loves sea horses so much, she wants one for a pet…no matter what!

Of all the creatures in the ocean, sea horses are Echo Reef’s favorite. They’re sweet and gentle and they glide through the water so gracefully. When Echo discovers that Rocky Ridge, one of her Trident Academy classmates, has his own pet sea horse, she wants one right away. Not everyone agrees sea horses should be pets, however—perhaps they are happiest when swimming freely. But Echo thinks that if Rocky can make a sea horse happy, she can too! Can’t she?

Sully the Seahorse is a heart-warming, beautifully illustrated rhyming picture book which encourages children to believe in themselves and to be proud of who they are.

It’s the day of the Sea School Stars annual talent contest and little Sully really wants to win!! Oh, how he longs to be a super-fast fish or a gigantic, strong whale. Poor Sully never wins ANYTHING!

This heart-warming story follows Sully on his race for victory – where he comes across a BIG challenge and discovers his own very special talents. ON YOUR MARKS, READY……GET SET GO!!!

The ocean is buzzing with excitement practising their performances for the competition….all except for Sully who doesn’t feel very good at anything at all.

“The contest starts soon,” reminded Miss Trout.
Sully felt worried and started to shout:
“Do I have to take part, Miss? Please say no.”
“Yes,” she replied. “You should give it a go.”

Poor Sully becomes disheartened as he loses some of the races, but the contest comes to a halt when a dark shadow descends upon Sea School and threatens to change Sully’s future forever!

Will Sully find his sparkle before it’s too late?

The book explores the issue of self-esteem in a fun and heart-warming way and encourages children to celebrate differences and appreciate their own talents and qualities. It’s sometimes hard for children to understand that they can’t always be the best at everything.

One of life’s most important lessons is learning how to deal with making mistakes and being able to lose!

Children sometimes find it difficult to understand why they came last in the race, or why they never win the writing contest. Sully discovers in the story that if you keep on trying then you’ll find your own special talents – and that’s the message for children too – just keep trying and be proud of who you are! It encourages children to become resilient so that they can bounce back from challenges and failure.

This is the second book in my Sea School Stories series. The first book, Monty the Manatee, focuses on kindness and anti-bullying and has sold thousands of copies around the world.

Take a journey to the bottom of the sea with the gentle merman farmer who tends fanciful fields of sea cucumbers and sea beans with the help of his two seahorses. He must defend his cowfish and sea hens from fierce sea lions and tiger sharks, and free any sea creatures caught in traps or nets dropped from above. Legendary artist Dahlov Ipcar brings this enchanting undersea world to life with her vibrant illustrations and clever transformation of a traditional farmer’s tasks to a deep sea setting.

From renowned picture book illustrator Jerry Pinkney comes a dramatic and beautifully painted pop-up compendium of sea creatures. From crabs to seahorses to hammerhead sharks to octopi to corals, the animals in this volume literally jump off the page at you. Every spread surprises with a fishy friend coming up for air and multiple pull tabs which allow kids to learn more about their fascinating behavior.

This interactive book captures all the lush beauty of the underwater world in Jerry Pinkney’s evocative illustrations. The animals and their ocean home come to life through the paper engineering of John Strejan and Jim Diaz. The simple text adds authoritative information to this richly entertaining experience.

Each interactive spread encourages readers to explore a particular ocean environment and its cast of characters: an anemone rides a hermit crab, which looms from its shell, claws waving; a goosefish wiggles its lure to entice smaller fish into its umbrella-wide mouth; a coral reef brims with camouflaged creatures; a squid speeds through the water like a jet. Hints in the text direct kids to the harder-to-find pop-ups and the interactive features hidden within the layout, which reflect the way certain sea creatures blend into their seafloor seascape. This is one cool book that kids will want to pore over again and again. Come on in, the water’s wonderful!

The Dark Blue Sea! by George Byron

There is a pleasure in the pathless woods,
There is a rapture on the lonely shore,
There is society where none intrudes,
By the deep sea, and music in its roar:
I love not man the less, but nature more,
From these our interviews, in which I steal
From all I may be, or have been before,
To mingle with the universe, and feel
What I can ne’er express, yet cannot all conceal.-

Roll on, thou deep and dark blue ocean-roll!
Ten thousand fleets sweep over thee in vain;
Man marks the earth with ruin-his control
Stops with the shore;-upon the watery plain
The wrecks are all thy deed, nor doth remain
A shadow of man’s ravage, save his own,
When for a moment, like a drop of rain,
He sinks into thy depths with bubbling groan,
Without a grave, unknell’d, uncoffin’d, and unknown.

His steps are not upon thy paths-thy fields
Are not a spoil for him-thou dost arise
And shake him from thee; the vile strength he wields
For earth’s destruction thou dost all despise,
Spurning him from thy bosom to the skies,
And send’st him, shivering in thy playful spray,
And howling, to his gods, where haply lies
His petty hope in some near port or bay,
And dashest him again to earth: there let him lay.

The armaments which thunderstrike the walls
Of rock-built cities, bidding nations quake,
And monarchs tremble in their capitals,
The oak leviathans, whose huge ribs make
Their clay creator the vain title take
Of lord of thee, and arbiter of war;
These are thy toys, and, as the snowy flake,
They melt into thy yeast of waves, which mar
Alike the armada’s pride, or spoils of Trafalgar.

Thy shores are empires, changed in all save thee-
Assyria, Greece, Rome, Carthage, what are they?
Thy waters washed them power while they were free,
And many a tyrant since: their shores obey
The stranger, slave or savage; their decay
Has dried up realms to deserts:-not so thou,
Unchangeable, save to thy wild waves’ play-
Time writes no wrinkle on thine azure brow-
Such as creation’s dawn beheld, thou rollest now.

Thou glorious mirror, where the Almighty’s form
Glasses itself in tempests; in all time
Calm or convulsed-in breeze, or gale, or storm,
Icing the pole, or in the torrid clime
Dark-heaving; boundless, endless and sublime-
The image of eternity-the throne
Of the invisible; even from out thy slime
The monsters of the deep are made; each zone
Obeys thee; thou goest forth, dread, fathomless, alone.

And I have loved thee, ocean! And my joy
Of youthful sports was on thy breast to be
Borne, like thy bubbles, onward: from a boy
I wanton’d with thy breakers-they to me
Were a delight; and if the freshening sea
Made them a terror-’twas a pleasing fear,
For I was as it were a child of thee,

Look deep into nature, and you will understand everything better. –Albert Einstein.

Spring sun infuses life to all of us, sentiments of joy and fun! New born life blooms all around us filling the places with a buzzing tranquillity. Bees and butterflies remind us of how busy life can be in nature’s cycle and how wonderfully this cycle goes around season by season, year by year. After a harsh winter from many aspects now I got my strength back to write my RockPost for the month of April. Writing on a blog is a great commitment and involves careful planning. Thinking of how life can change in a matter of days, I decided that what is the most important thing to do is to simply ponder what I should do! What I am told the last month or so, is to Relax and Take a breath! No chance for the second. I will be luckier next month regarding the first one, I guess. Nature is the best medicine when life’s cycle in real life seems to need that break. Especially kids, after being enclosed inside somany months need to enjoy nature and what is the best way for that? Gardening is the keyword.

If grasshoppers of any kind jump on your hands, hair or scare the wits out of you, well be open to possibilities, my little gardeners! Life is a journey full of surprises and getting to know plants, insects is a good way to get rid of your tablets and video games! You may scream at the top of your lungs and dance furiously because of the unknown visitor but still see the funny side of things. Till next time’s RockPost enjoy your stay!

School Library Journal ended their starred review of this book by saying, “this book is a wonderful addition to units that focus not only on seeds and plants, but also on writing and the language arts.” Indeed, this book would be a fantastic jumping off point for an activity that mixes creative writing and art with science.

The inspirational story of George Washington Carver and his childhood secret garden is brought to life in this picture book biography by the author-illustrator team behind Muhammad Ali: A Champion Is BornThis nonfiction picture book is an excellent choice to share during homeschooling, in particular for children ages 4 to 6. It’s a fun way to learn to read and as a supplement for activity books for children.

When George Washington Carver was just a young child, he had a secret: a garden of his own.

Here, he rolled dirt between his fingers to check if plants needed more rain or sun. He protected roots through harsh winters, so plants could be reborn in the spring. He trimmed flowers, spread soil, studied life cycles. And it was in this very place that George’s love of nature sprouted into something so much more–his future.

Gene Barretta’s moving words and Frank Morrison’s beautiful paintings tell the inspiring life and history of George Washington Carver, from a baby born into slavery to celebrated botanist, scientist, and inventor. His passion and determination are the seeds to this lasting story about triumph over hardship–a tale that begins in a secret garden.

In the orchard
a honey bee buzzes.
Its legs brush pollen
inside a fragrant
pink flower:

A small green fruit
begins to grow
and grow and grow….

Peaches and peas
and even peanuts —
they all begin with
a single flower:
How?
Open this book
and find out!

Roses are red,
Violets are blue…

And they’re only two of the flowers in this book of bright colors and delightful information. Young readers will be fascinated to find out what flower can be used to make a doll, which flower flavors tea, and which flower farmers feed to chickens.

Author Jerry Pallotta and illustrator Leslie Evans have collaborated to produce a stunning bouquet of words and pictures about the world of flowers–one of nature’s most beautiful gifts.

MULTICULTURAL CHILDREN’S BOOK DAY, 2021! My review for children’s book “LOST”

“LOST” is a heartfelt children’s book on the importance of keeping memories alive, written by Christine Reynebeau and illustrated by Rchael Hawker; portraying a stuffed animal Lou (a cute giraffe) being Lucy’s favourite companion. The writer in a very sensitive way refers to sadness after we lose something, speaking for Lucy she used to have her giraffe everywhere, sharing these special moments of her life, feeling the bond with her stuffed animal which filled her with joy, security and calmness.

But when she was on a ship traveling with her family on the deck, the wind got Lou, away and Lucy couldn’t overcome the sadness of losing what was most precious for her! Lou! It took her a while to accept her father’s words: “Love never ends, and sadness from loss comes and goes!” Lucy undestands that sadness can’t bring the smile on her face, but what it really counts has to do with the memories we keep in our hearts and help us spread delight in our life.

This amazing book “LOST” is a beautifully written book evoking deep sentiments so our special attachemnet to certain stuffed animals stays forever imprinted in our mind and heart no matter what our age is. The message of harsh seperation is somehting I am sure little readers will grasp right away, feeling sorry for Lucy but realizing that crying brings no end to suffering and loss. The message of hope is best depicted on Lucy’s face and we all feel emotional once we read the word “memories” because memories are what keeps the flame of hope alive! I was so touched by the illustrator’s work, such amazing hues and ovewhelming depiction of Lucy’s sentiments, which made me instantly be connected with Lou and Lucy!
